觀妙章第一
Key Takeaway: "The Way that can be told of is not an Unvarying Way; The names that can be named are not unvarying names." — Laozi, Daodejing Chapter 1
The Tao that can be spoken of is not the eternal, unchanging Tao. When we cling to rigid labels and definitions, we touch only the superficial surface of things. By stepping back from compulsive desiring, we open ourselves to perceive the subtle, hidden essence of reality—a foundational perspective explored in Daodejing Chapter 1.
Daodejing Chapter 1: The Ineffable Source of All Existence
The wisdom of Chapter 1 addresses a fundamental human dynamic: how we navigate ambition, quietude, and the natural flow of existence. In the classical tradition, this passage serves as both a metaphysical mirror and a practical compass for daily living and leadership. Explore how this principle translates into contemporary daily life in our guide to Why You Feel Trapped by Labels—Chinese Wisdom for Modern Life.
By shifting our focus from outer coercion to internal stillness, we uncover a more resilient way of relating to ourselves and the world around us.
Complete Chapter Translation: Modern Western Reading
The Way that can be told of is not an Unvarying Way; The names that can be named are not unvarying names. It was from the Nameless that Heaven and Earth sprang; The named is but the mother that rears the ten thousand creatures, in all their myriad forms.
Truly, “Only one free from personal desire can perceive the subtle essence”; Whoever remains bound by desire sees only the outer manifestations. These two things issued from the same mould, but nevertheless are different in name. This “same mould” we can but call the Mystery, Or rather the “Darker than any Mystery”, The Doorway from which emerge all Secret Essences.
