Chapter 66 | Placing Oneself Behind: How Rivers and Seas Become Kings of the Valleys

後己章第六十六

Key Takeaway: "Rivers and seas can be kings of a hundred valleys because they are good at lying low." — Laozi, Daodejing Chapter 66

How do great rivers and oceans become kings of a hundred mountain valleys? Because they excel at staying lower than them. Therefore, to stand above people, one must speak with humility—a foundational perspective explored in Daodejing Chapter 66.

Daodejing Chapter 66: Leading by Following and Uplifting Without Burden

The wisdom of Chapter 66 addresses a fundamental human dynamic: how we navigate ambition, quietude, and the natural flow of existence. In the classical tradition, this passage serves as both a metaphysical mirror and a practical compass for daily living and leadership. Follow the sequential development of the text in Laozi’s next philosophical movement in The Three Treasures: Compassion, Frugality, and Not Daring to Be First.

By shifting our focus from outer coercion to internal stillness, we uncover a more resilient way of relating to ourselves and the world around us.

Complete Chapter Translation: Modern Western Reading

How did the great rivers and seas get their kingship over the hundred lesser streams? Through the merit of being lower than they; that was how they got their kingship. Therefore the Sage In order to be above the people Must speak as though he were lower than the people.

In order to guide them He must put himself behind them. Only thus can the Sage be on top and the people not be crushed by his weight. Only thus can he guide, and the people not be led into harm Indeed in this way everything under heaven will into harm be pushed by him and will not find his guidance irk-some. This he does by not striving; and because he does not strive, none can contend with him.
