愛己章第七十二
Key Takeaway: "When the people do not fear awe-inspiring authority, then greater cosmic authority will descend upon them." — Laozi, Daodejing Chapter 72
When the people do not fear petty human authority, the greater cosmic authority descends upon them. Do not restrict their living space; do not wear them out with burdensome taxes. Love yourself without self-importance—a foundational perspective explored in Daodejing Chapter 72.
Daodejing Chapter 72: Self-Knowledge over Self-Display
The wisdom of Chapter 72 addresses a fundamental human dynamic: how we navigate ambition, quietude, and the natural flow of existence. In the classical tradition, this passage serves as both a metaphysical mirror and a practical compass for daily living and leadership. Follow the sequential development of the text in Laozi’s next philosophical movement in Trusting the Great Web: Heaven’s Net Is Vast and Casts with Wide Meshes.
By shifting our focus from outer coercion to internal stillness, we uncover a more resilient way of relating to ourselves and the world around us.
Complete Chapter Translation: Modern Western Reading
Never mind if the people are not intimidated by your authority. A Mightier Authority will deal with them in the end. Do not narrow their dwelling or harass their lives; and for the very reason that you do not harass them, they will cease to turn from you. Therefore the Sage knows himself but does not show himself. Knows his own value, but does not put himself on high. Truly, he rejects that but takes this”.
